Changing Negative Thought Patterns

I was talking with a good friend of mine last night, and he came out with a quote – some self improvement advice actually – that I hadn’t heard before which really had an impact on me …

“Change what you’re doing, and you’ll change what you’re thinking of doing.”

He told me that a short time ago he was extremely upset at a particular individual, and he really wanted to ‘club the guy’.

However, being a student of continuous improvement himself, he decided to call some one and talk it through.

In the process of trying to get some one on the phone to speak to about it, and by the time he connected with a friend of his, he had all but forgotten what he was so mad about in the first place!

He changed what he was focusing on – clubbing the guy – and focused his attention instead on getting somebody on the phone.  And in the process, he changed what he was thinking of doing.

I thought to myself, “How useful a tool is that!!”

There are so many situations where we can get out of a negative thought pattern by simply ‘doing something else’ to change our focus – and our mental state.

What are some situations that you can apply this technique to?

Change our focus can help. It helped me before. I’ve used this sentence to change my focus.

“What can I do now to make this (situation) better?”

    Here’re techniques I use. http://www.selfhelpfriend.com/confidence-help-self.html

I agree, Sally. We need to be proactive – as you said – and think of things WE can do to better the situation.

    Best to you,
    Scott
