Goal Achievement – Dealing With Doubt

Today’s quote is #2 from my Always Remember List – “When in doubt, just take the next small step.”

As you can imagine, given my philosophy of incremental improvement, I find myself referring to this quote quite often.

It applies to almost every every of life I can think of.  Let’s take a look at how it applies to some real world examples:

Weight Loss

Instead of changing your entire diet – ‘for good’ – just take the next small step. Make your next meal a body-friendly meal of fresh, raw fruits/vegetables and a low-fat meat.  This could mean a nice ripe orange and a few egg whites for breakfast, or a garden salad loaded with fresh vegetables and some grilled chicken/fish for lunch or dinner.   Again, just focus on your next meal, not your ‘lifetime diet’.

Paying Off Debt

If you’re faced with a mountain of debt, it can become overwhelming fast.  So just take the next small step.  Pay off your lowest balance first, enjoy that feeling of accomplishment, then take the money that was going to that debt and add it to the monthly payment  on your next lowest balance. Continue this cascading payment plan until you’re above water.  Again, small incremental steps.

Goal Achievement

Instead of looking at your goals (whatever they may be) as insurmountable Goliaths, break them down into bite-sized pieces and chip away bit by bit.  If you want to run a 5k in the spring, start now by walking a mile 3-4 days per week. Slowly add jogging into the schedule, then increase your distance slightly each week.  You’ll be at the 5k mark within 3-6 months.  Again, just take the next small step.

Whatever you are aiming for, just ask yourself, “What’s the next small step that I can take toward this goal?”

Then take that step …
