A Simple Time Management Tool For Home Business Owners

One of the key factors that play in to your ultimate success level as a home business owner is time management.  If you do not manage your time well – especially if you’re working your home business on a part-time basis, your chances of success are greatly diminished.

Fortunately, there are some free tools available online that can help you immensely when it comes to time management.  Here is one that I like – and use often – in particular:

Online Egg Timer

The reason I like this tool so much is that it takes the burden off of me to continually check the clock to see if I’m running on schedule.  Here is how I suggest that you use it effectively:

1)  Choose a task from your to-do list

2)  Choose the amount of time you want to spend on that task

3)  Set the timer, and focus on – and this is a key pointnothing else but working on that task until the timer goes off.

4)  Once the timer goes off, take a quick breather, then repeat step 3 until all of your to-do list items are complete.

Sounds so simple, doesn’t it?  Don’t be fooled by the simplicity – this works like gangbusters!

Try it, and you’ll be amazed at how much your time management improves and the bottom line of your home business increases.

The 3 Main Causes of Home Business Failure

If you want to succeed in your chosen home business, one of the areas you should certainly concentrate on is avoiding the major mistakes that commonly cause failure.

Make sense?

Therefore, I’d like to outline what I feel are the 3 main causes for home business failure.

1)  Under Capitalization

I see this happen often.  Just like in the ‘real’ business world, you will need a certain amount of capital available for common home business expenses like office equipment, advertising and marketing materials, etc.

Too often people buy in to an opportunity or business system and do not have the funds available to sustain and grow their new venture. I’m in a fortunate position in that my business costs me very little to operate, but that is certainly not the norm in the industry.  You need to make sure that you have enough money on hand to not only have product on hand but also to operate your business and let the world know that you exist.

2)  Not Treating Your Home Business Like a Business

Even though most people start off part-time, usually working their new business after their work day, it is extremely important to view their new venture as a ‘real’ business if the goal is to succeed on any type of scale.

That means Monday through Friday for at least 1-2 hours each night … minimum.  I like to tell people to expect to spend 10-15 hours per week to get things going in the right direction.

Inconsistency will bury you!  Even if it’s only for an hour per day, just be consistent on your home business work schedule.  By doing this, you’ll see progress on a week to week basis – provided you are spending the time on business building activities and not organizing your desk. :-)

3)  Trying to Re-Invent the Wheel

Most home businesses these days come with, as part of your package, some type of business manual or automated system that you can plug in to and utilize.  Follow it!

Why do McDonald’s franchises rarely, if ever, fail – even though they are largely run by a bunch of teenagers?

Because there is a system in place.  And there is a mandate that the franchise employees follow it!  It works, it has worked in the past, and it will continue to work … and that is why the folks at corporate demand that it be followed.

So, do not try to re-invent the wheel.  Be creative, sure, but don’t stray too far from the guidelines and system that has worked for successful people that have preceded you.

I hope this post has helped you in determining what to avoid during your quest for home business success.

Home Business Success – The Liberating Power of Focus

There is nothing more powerful when it comes to time management and home business success than the concept of focus.  And with this acquired power comes complete liberation.

I say that through personal experience, for when I simplify my working from home life through focusing on my main goals, tasks and intentions, I get far more accomplished. And as a result I am physically and mentally liberated because my mind is in alignment with my goals and I am not running around, physically or mentally, in a multitude of different directions.

So, to that end, I have decided to take a different – but somewhat related – course with the content of this blog. If you are a frequent reader then I am sure you have noticed the title change.

For the last 20 years I have been involved in the home business industry at various levels. If I had to choose my true passion in life, it would be helping other people improve their lives through developing a secondary or primary income from home.

Yes … I am, and will always be, a student of self improvement and personal development. Both of these skills come in to play in a huge way when developing a home business. Therefore, I will still create posts relating to those two extremely important life improvement topics.

However, the bulk of my post topics moving forward will be centered around helping those people – who are increasing in number dramatically in this economy – that wish to develop a thriving home business.

While I do not consider myself a true expert in the self-help field, I do consider myself an expert in the home business industry. My own home business – centered around my partnership with GBG – is thriving and growing by the day.

Therefore, as some one who believes that we should always use our talents and skills to help the largest number of people as possible, it only makes sense that I devote mine toward helping others with their home business development.

As has always been the case, I hope that my blog content – both in the past and moving forward – continually brings true value to the reader and to the world as a whole.  In some ways, this feels like my first post.  There will be many to follow in the coming years … I hope you come along for the journey.
