Landscaping Jobs From Home – Turn Your Love of Plants Into Cash
Posted by Scott Cofer in Other Work From Home Ideas on August 11, 2010
Do you enjoy working with plants? Are you looking for a way to earn extra income from home? The following article will show you how to develop your own landscaping jobs, all from the comfort of your kitchen table.
I was fortunate enough to come across this article recently, and I thought it would be a great addition to the various options I present here on my blog.
For the most part, I usually forward various online income ideas as well as network marketing business opportunities.
However, I’d like to start thinking more “outside the box”, and this is my first post along those lines. So, without further delay, here is a great article outlining a simple business plan for running a landscaping business from home.
—
This article is actually an example of a simple yet, excellent marketing plan. Pay close attention to how I went out and found new business at a time of the year when things are normally slow, and not only did I make $1,148.00, my friend Franky also made $1,060.00.
Because I chose to keep myself out of the rat race of landscaping new homes, I went after a market that was more of an impulsive type market. New home landscaping is almost a necessity, since new homes don’t have any shrubs or grass. Not only that, many housing developments actually require people to have their landscaping done within a certain number of months from the time they move into their new homes. Therefore, when the house is done, people are anxious to get it landscaped.
Since I wasn’t in that market, and most impulsive gardening decisions are made in the spring, my business typically slowed down during the very hot summer months. So one year I decided to do a little test marketing, to see if I could muster up some work during the summer.
I decided to do a test mailing to 350 homeowners in an area where I knew the people could afford landscaping services, but were not extremely rich. I mailed a letter to these 350 homes, and the letter basically said I could help them with any landscaping project that needed done, and because my business was slow during the summer I could give them a really fair price.
Of the 350 people that received the letter 3 called me. I immediately sold two jobs, and the third job was still open for discussion. On one of the first two jobs I made about $350. and on the other I made about $700. That’s net profit. That’s how much I got to keep. Since the mailing cost less than $175., my immediate profit on the mailing was $875. Not bad at all considering this was only a part-time business for me. But don’t forget about that third caller. I had not even met this person yet.
The reason he called is because he happened to own a 60 unit apartment building in the Cleveland area, and he needed some trees or shrubs planted around the parking lot. The architect that he had been working with suggested Taxus Hicksi, which is an evergreen that is easily trimmed and maintained to a certain size. However, all the landscapers he had spoken with in Cleveland wanted about $44.00 each to install these plants. Although a fair price, that amounted to $4,664.00 because he needed 106 plants.
He contacted me because he was hoping I could find a less expensive plant to use. After visiting the job site I realized that Taxus Hicksi actually was about the best choice for this situation, so I told him I would see if I could get a better price on the plants. I showed in a wholesale catalog that the wholesale price was $22.00 per plant, but mentioned that I might be able to find another source.
I knew that my friend Franky did at one time grow this particular plant, so I gave him a call. Turns out he did have 106 plants available, and was anxious to move some of them, he quoted me $10.00 each, balled in burlap. I called my customer and told him that I found good plants at a lower price, and that I could actually deliver and plant them for $22.00 per plant, which is exactly half of what others had quoted him. He was delighted, and I did the job. As a matter of fact he actually asked me to install some additional plants while I was there.
I hired 3 guys to help me do the job, and we had it done in one day. After I paid for the plants, and paid my help, I actually made $1,148.00 on that one day job. My customer was so happy with the work we did that he asked me to come back the following week and do about another $700.00 worth of work. I made another $350.00 The following spring he hired me to re-landscape an older home that he had purchased, and I made another $600.00.
Remember the $175.00 that I spent to mail those 350 letters? The net profit on that mailing turned out to be about $2,973.00!!! And my friend Franky picked up $1,060.00 for the plants I bought from him. Were these 350 people I selected special? No they weren’t. Every town in America has at least 350 people just like them, probably thousands more.

Work at Home Schedule – 5 Reasons You Must Have One
Posted by Scott Cofer in Home Business Success Tips on April 22, 2010
A defined work at home schedule … why do you need one? One of the promises – and draws – of working at home for yourself is the total freedom that it can provide — no time clock to punch, no time sheets, and no one to dictate to you exactly how you will spend each moment of your working day. Very attractive indeed! However, there is a huge downside to this freedom if you are not extremely careful.
What is this downside? Simply this – you could very well be wasting a lot of your precious time on unproductive activities, and this can absolutely destroy your business.
A friend of mine is a civil engineer and spends time every day filling out detailed spreadsheets to account for every minute of his work day. He is employed by a large company, and his day often includes work on a multitude of different projects for different clients. He completely detests the activity and I have always thought of it as a waste of time.
Not any longer. My work from home business recently took off and I soon realized that I simply could not get all of my critical tasks accomplished each day without adhering to a defined work at home schedule.
So guess what? I now have my own spread sheet and agenda for the day and I have improved my productivity and reduced my stress immeasurably. If you don’t think you need a schedule for your home business then please think again. Then read on …
After going through a period of relatively low productivity – you know, those days when your “To Do” list seems to grow exponentially each time you look at it – I knew something simply had to change.
Now, I must admit I was going through a tough period of time in my life for a number of reasons. However, I am old enough to know that there is never a perfect time in one’s life. In my case, there are simply a few issues that I am dealing with this year, and next year these obstacles will be traded in for new and fresher ones.
So, after studying the different uses of my time and seeking advice from some other work-at-home business people, I discovered five important reasons for me to embrace the idea of adhering to a work at home schedule and embracing time management:
1. It’s far too easy to waste time doing unproductive and low priority tasks
2. It’s far too easy to get sidetracked or distracted from your current (important) task by less critical ones
3. Unscheduled work time has a way of overlapping into your free time until you’re left with no free time at all
4. Your free time has a way of overlapping into your work time and you can fall behind on important work projects
5. When you concentrate your time and effort on the highest priority tasks and projects, MUCH more work gets accomplished!
I am sure that I’m not the only home business person making prudent use of the work at home schedule. I recently had the pleasure of taking part in an online forum where people from all walks of life had decided to embrace the concept of time scheduling and found it to be much more freeing than restrictive. After all, when you are the one setting up the work schedule and not a “boss”, you are completely free to schedule yourself for a leisurely lunch with a friend, an afternoon off, or a even a whole day off if needed – whenever you decide.
Now that is freedom! :-)
If you are having difficulty setting up your work at home schedule and tasks/priorities for each day, each week and each month then give this a try – simply consult with a close friend or family member and ask them for some helpful input and tips for designing your schedule.

Low Cost Home Based Business Opportunities
Posted by Scott Cofer in Home Business Success Tips, Online Work From Home on March 22, 2010
With all the work from home ideas available both online and offline today, are there any home based business opportunities that won’t cost a small fortune to get up and running and operate on a month to month basis?
This was the big question that I had when I was looking to start my own home business. Some additional questions I had were:
- Is there a company that I can work with that actually has my best interest in mind?
- Is there a company that will actually pay me for what I produce, instead of trying to hold back (keep) some of my earnings through a series of ‘gotchas’ and ‘gimmicks’?
- Is there a home based business that is actually affordable to start (in my case, I was looking for something under $50), but has the ability to eventually generate a six figure annual income?
If I could find a company that fit these lofty criteria, then I knew I’d be on my way to eventually working from home full-time – which had been a dream of mine for nearly two decades.
So, with those criteria in place I began looking for a home based business opportunity. Most of the ones I discovered answered my questions above with a resounding ‘no’. Many were ridiculously expensive to get started and/or the upside potential just wasn’t there.
However, I was fortunate enough to discover an option that could answer ‘yes’ to all of my questions, and another one that was close (the only drawback was the ’six figure income’ criteria). The options I discovered were GBG and Project Payday, respectively. I was on my way.
I give more detail regarding both of these home based business opportunities on my best work from home ideas page. If you’d like more information, please visit that page now.
I hope that this post was of value to you, and saved you some serious legwork. There is a lot of expensive ‘junk’ out there so beware … it’s easy to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars and end up with virtually nothing.

- Scott
